Default A Potential Owner Asking For Your Advice

Alright, I am having a second child soon and that means my days of scooting around in a 2-door are done, time for easy backseat access. I have a very short list of options that has just become shorter based on some general research, and I think the best way to decide would be to ask you, as owners what you think. I have two remaining choices (both volvo).
For under $900 is a 1990 740 GLE, and a 1986 740 Turbo. Personally I would prefer the turbo, as it is in great shape, a manual (I drive an auto currently and get a little sick of screeching to a halt every time I go for the non-existent clutch. Funny as hell for others I am sure) and what guy does not want a turbo? I have not personally seen the GLE to verify whether or not it is a manual.
The GLE is younger, but does have a crack across the window and a rebuilt tranny. Nothing major on the Turbo. Both are sedans and have reasonably the same mileage. I am 25, plenty of mechanical know-how and wan't to know the following things.

1. Which is more reliable?
2. Which is easier to maintain?
3. Common issues?
4. Average Life?
5. Your choice?

Reviews are great and all, but I would rather get an enthusiasts opinion to make a more informed purchase!!!

Thank You!!!

Depending on the mileage we would need to know to make a more informed comment...

1. More reliable if in good condition would probably be the GLE.

2. Easier to maintain depending on condition would bethe GLE. Turbo = great car but more parts. More expensive parts so thusly more money when it breaks down.

4. Depending on the current mileage I bet you could get a good 300,000 to 400,000 miles out of each one depending on condition and current mileage.

5. My choice, neither. Both are old and out of date. I would seriously look into an 850 sedean non turbo or turbo and or a 1998 s70 non turbo or turbo. Yes will cost more then those two cars, but are much better cars.

Thank you for the advice, and I understand the out of date issue completely. However I am on a budget, so newer is not an option for me. I also tend to have a better understanding with older vehicles. The current mileage on each is 170k.
I will hopefully be taking a trip down within the week to look at the GLE. Aside from basics, is there anything bizarre about a Volvo I should look for?

Thanks
