I was thinking of buying an S40 or S80 for my wife, went for a test drive of a 2001 S40 and is exactly the same size as my 2001 Jetta TDI.
Feels good but has very small rear seats..(just like a jetta!!!)
My gf kinda liked it but it wasn't very enthousiastic about it.. she's curently driving an 1983 MB 300SD so she likes bigger cars.
So for a bit more $ S80 showed up, didn't took it for a ride, i did a quick net search and on this forums and all I can read is complaints for the 1999 S80 model wich is a shame it really has a nice shape outside and inside, plus Volvo is well known for their trouble free cars.

Now what do you guys can give me as an advice or things to check ? Steer away from S80 ? is the S40 the same as a S80 but smaller ?
Since i was initially looking at an S40 i don't know the engine option on S80 is it 2.9T and 2.9 non-turbo ? does it make a difference in the reliability of the car ?

So far i had 0 problems with my Jetta, but i know i was playing russian roulete.

I really want an european/german car if not I'll have to look at the boring but well enginered and trouble free Lexus
