So I'm trying to figure out where my camshafts need to be set at when I'm at tdc on cylinder one. I don't have the timing belt cover with the timing marks. I have a 2.4 Volvo 2009. My scanner says my timing is advanced at 0
I've never noticed where #1 piston is when I've put a head back on a 5 cyl Volvo engine - before putting the cams back in you simply align the crank with the mark on the oil pump housing, or some remove the starter and use the crank locking tool.
But I don't think #1 is at TDC with that mark lined up.
If you are installing a cylinder head - you are going to need an upper timing belt cover, and possibly the cam locking tool - Any other method and you risk bending valves.
Get a upper rear timing belt cover to be able to line up the marks - any other method and you risk bending valves. The marks on the cam gears point almost straight up - but I would not rely on that estimated position. You will end up with cam position codes if it's off a tooth or 2
