Hi guys n girlies,

I just had a water pump and cambelt change on my Volvo c70 convertible year 2000 she is 2.5 turbo, and since then she keeps drinking water there is no oil/water on the expansion tank cap plus that has been replaced too, also there us no leaks could someone advise me on this as she is booked in with Volvo tomorrow at 1.30? cheers guys

 

An engine where coolant disappears can only have it disappear a few ways:

1. - The coolant is leaking externally from the engine and/or cooling system.

2. - The coolant is leaking internally in the engine into the oil reservoir.

3. - The coolant is leaking out the combustion chamber.

There are telltale signs for each. The most obvious thing that I would check is the water pump itself. I never, and repeat never, change a water pump on a Volvo unless it is leaking and on the aluminum white block engine, that is a grand total of two in 20 years. I have, however, known of people who had it changed like many Toyota and Nissan dealers suggest only to have a leaker afterwards.

 

hi there thanks so much for getting back to me 😉 I will get my partner who is a qualified mechanic to check these for me then only reason he isn't sorting it is having the time as he is self employed so this is the reason she is going to Volvo tomorrow so we can be told what it is that's causing her to lose water like I said on another page she uses about 3/4 to 1/4 a day out of 1 litre bottle n then another time she will be on maximum n lose nothing in the expansion tank also when she is in reverse I have a like rumbling noise by my brake pedal n then when I put her in drive it goes until I put my put down n then it's back but she drives asswwt as a nut doent miss a beat so I've been told it's a engine mount she is the 2435 petrol engine auto 20 valve 5 cylinder 193bhp version year 2000 if you could give me any idea of what this could be that would be fab I will get the hubster to check her when he gets home thanks guys 😀😁😃😉

 

I'm not sure if this is one of those engines, but some have to be refilled three times to burp out all the air, letting the car heat up and cool down between each step. Find a step-by-step guide (pelican parts has one) for changing the coolant in your car. It may be just the normal cycle of refilling the radiator.

I work on a lot of cars and I can't keep track of which ones need it and which don't.

 

+1 on the "burb". its not uncommon to do some cooling system work on these cars, only to check the fluid levels and find you have an empty overflow container. Just keep an eye on it for the short term and look around for any driveway spotting or staining around the ends of the hoses/sides of the radiators. Also as part of routine maintenance you should replace the overflow container cap.
