Default GPS for car? Portable...what do I get?

Holiday approaching... I failed to get my wife what I wanted to get her last year (GPS), so I will do it this year. As with all electronics, the units change daily. I want to spend under $200 (she really doesn't travel that much), and have a reliable unit.
Any suggestions? I hear that the top two companies are Garmin and Magellen. There are just SOOOOOO many models.

Any Garmin will work fine. A little slow to connect but if you are just looking at directions, Garmin's are very user friendly.

+1 on the Garmin. Bought Tom Tom for the kids and they're OK, but I like Garmin the best.

Personally I use Tom Tom but that's only because I'm an information addict. Tom Tom will allow you to easily see your gps point data, navagate to a gps point and see how many satalites I am connected to. Who really needs to know that?

I also use garmin and i am perfectly fine with it. It is little slow in the beginning but for the direction's it is best option.
