Is it just me?

Is it just me?
Maybe its cause im new to the whole Volvo thing but, does these forums scare anybody else? I mean ive been on other auto forums for my cars for a long time, but all i can seem to see here is one tech question, or mechanical issue after another. If i didnt know any better i would say, that im in for more then regular maintenance at the shop . This doesnt inspire confidence. WOULD SOMEONE THROW A FREAKING PIE OR SOMETHING. lol. I would expect alot of this on volvospeed forums cause they dont really have a general chatting section. unless i just missed it or something.
like i said im new to this but just wondering. Any bullet proof stories of Volvo any body here has. Funny stories?

RE: Is it just me?
Hi John,
The most popular reason for technical problems is the owners' ignorance & neglect. In my personal opinion. 85-90% of drivers on the road don't even read the owner's manual or follow scheduled maintenance. Even a Lexus falls apart in a several years in the hands of "average" drivers. After reading your self-introduction, you seem well beyond "average driver", so most of the time you can fix troubles on your own.
Volvos are the safest passenger cars you can buy, but there are certain chronic problems to Volvos, and the most frequent one is electronic-related. For mechanical issues, 90% of the time it's genuine neglect & ignorance; not replacing the coolant, oil, brake fluid, and using cheap aftermarket parts (Volvos are extremely sensitive to the quality of parts, and 95% of the time OEM is the way to go).
This is a vendor many of us here use often:
http://www.fcpgroton.com/volvo.htm#s80
If a trouble is beyond your capability, make sure to have it serviced either at a dealer (don't get taken) or independent shops that specialise in Swedish/European makes. I wouldn't have my Volvo serviced at any of the franchise shops or generic town garages.
I hope this is some help to you.

RE: Is it just me?
Volvo Forums seems to be more in tune w/ the older crowd, who just join forums to find out problems and fix their car. That's why it seems that most members don't have much longevity (less than 20 posts).
If you want to go above and beyond, check out Volvospeed. I've found the best tool for problems is using both together. The people here know their ****.

RE: Is it just me?
Yeah using forums is great and using more then one is even better.
- VolvoSpeed: These guys cater to the 850 and 70 series models. They do respond to questions about other models too but their main focus is on the 850 and 70 series models.
- Swedespeed: These guys cater to the newer models and the newer S/V R models. Of course they do talk about and have sections for other models as well.
- TurboBricks: These guys cater to the old Volvo's, 240,740, 760, 960, 940... And that is about all. If you ask a question they might answer it, they might now.
-V70R.com: These guys are catering to the V70R models.
-VolvoForums: We cater to everything as you can see. I would bet that most of our users are one time users. They find the forum sign up ask a question get their answer or don't get their answer and leave and don't come back. I would also venture to guess that most of our users are 25 years plus.
- Volvo-Forums: I believe this forum is based somewhere out of Europe and caters to all Volvo cars just like this forum does.

RE: Is it just me?
Very common answer on volvospeed is - Did you use the search? Which is a real piece of crap to use. I'm in a really bitchy mood today for some reason. Maybe I should quit responding, but what the heck.
I have three Volvo's right now and have had problems with them but for the most part I find them the best cars for the money on the road today. I bought my first one in 85 and I'm on my 7th now. My mother in law, both my daughters and my son all have Volvo's.
What I like best about the 850 Turbo is when you pull up along side a fast car and they can not pull away from you. I swear a guy in a Vette almost pooped his pants when he looked over and saw a Volvo right next to him after coming off the line at a red light. Wonder what he thought when I showed him my tail lights? It was one of those 80's Vettes not the newer ones, but it was still fun.
Back in the 80's I blew the doors off of a Mercendes 450SL withmy first Volvo a760 Turbo Diesel. It was a guy and woman passenger in the car and I kept playing with him and she was really pissed off. We were on route 66 coming off the Beltway around Manassas exit and he flew by me really fast, and Iwent after him. When I caught him I stayed right beside him no matter how fast he went and then when he hit about 80 mph I floored it and passed him up. Slowed back down and let him catch up with me and did the same thing again.
The reason you see problems with Volvos on this board is because people have a problem with their car and do an internet search for the problem and they end up here and ask for help. Not many people search internet for a place to tell others how much they like their Volvo, but plenty of people like their Vovlos. Trust me.

RE: Is it just me?
I agree. Most people don't spend the time to post anything about their cars when things are running smoothly, only when something is wrong. Kind of like going to the doctor - most people don't see any reason to go when they are feeling alright, they go when they have a problem. And many new member are quick to post a question which has already been answered in an older thread, making it appear to be a Huge reoccuring problem.
But since driving the Volvo, cops don't even look my way!
Gotta love that.

hanpark has the right idea.
Actually after looking at volvospeed forums, this place is better cause they lack general stuff where you can just shoot the breeze, technical forums are okay but i like the interaction. you get to chat it up and have some fun.

RE: Is it just me?
The biggest problem with forums is that people don't search. I'm sorry but it is true. The answer to your question could be answered somewhere on this forum or another forum. If they would just take the time to search they would proabbly find an answer. Not to mention the first thing you should do when you join a forum is read the RULES and also read all the PINNED threads as these all have helpful hints that will make life on the forum easier for them and everyone else.
I know VS says have you searched a lot, it is the most common answer. But it is true. I mean they get on a weekly basis probably 5-10 threads about how can I upgrade my 850. Or where can I buy this part from. If they would just search they would find the answer they are looking for. Not to mention I didn't make the VolvoForum Resources Threads for my health, they are here to help everyone out.

RE: Is it just me?
You don't know how many times I read a question, don't know the answer, so I search for the answer both here and on other sites then post the link to the answer. Person could have done the search themself, so I go either way on this one. I just think they actuallly can get rude over on volvospeed with the way they respond to people and many times somebody will answer and not know what they are talking about, but think the do. There must be about 1,000 threads on the PCV system cleaning, but somebody will undoubtedly start another one at least weekly. I do think their search feature sucks though.

RE: Is it just me?
I love to give people information, but when it is right here on the forum in plain view I get a little frustrated when I have to answer something I have answered many times before. But I still do it. I also point them in the direction they need to go to find stuff on the forum.

I only search when I recall the item being discussed or I'm really desperate for information.
But yeah, the worst response imo is "Search" and then no elaboration.
