Hello,
I'm new to marine diesels and have a few questions. Any tips on oil filter brands and oil?
My boat has an MD17D. Also I've been going through the cooling system as the engine gets hot at anything over 1750 rpms.
Any tips would be much appreciated.

 

Shell Rotella T6 15W40 is a favorite for diesel engines.

I assume you have a heat exchanger? That would be the first thing I would check. Some setup a bucket full of cleaner like Barnicle Buster with an electric pump and cycle the cleaner through the heat exchanger for an hour or two. Or pull heat exchanger and bring it to a radiator shop to have it cleaned.
