Default Oil filter Change

I have a 1999 XC volvo v70.

I know this is a very silly question, but I just changed my oil but forgot to replace the filter before putting the new oil into my car. I didnt know if I took the filter off, if the new oil would flow out or not. I would assume it would, but I had a Jeep just previous to my volvo and I didnt have to replace the filter with an empty oil tank. Thanks so much for your help.

The oil will run out. It's not the end of the world if you had changed your oil within 3K-5K miles and it wasn't too bad. But with the year of your car, if it's high mileage, you might just want to do it anyways soon. The old filter can get clogged up and reduce your oil flow, plus there can be up to a quart of dirty oil in there, so when you added new, you could have overfilled by accident. I would check your oil level again just to be safe.
