Volvo Stern Drive Identification
Hello everyone!
Sure am glad to have found this forum. I was wondering if someone could please help me with a few 280 questions?
1) Under a pretty good load (coming up to speed), I blew the upper unit of my stern drive (casing is cracked and makes loud cracking /clicking noises). When I took it apart, there was water in the drive leg and in the ujoint bellows. THe bellows may have had a small hole, so I've replaced it. The question is did the water come in before or after the crack? WHat causes such a crack? Picture attached.
2) I bought a spare that looks exactly the same, but has a different serial number format. The numbers are:
Blown Drive: 2800141Z B
Spare Drive: 2827842 C
I understand that B and C indicate different ratios. What determines the ratio, the upper, lower or both?
What happens if I use the upper unit from a C where I used to have a B? Can I change the prop size to compensate?
Thank you so much for any help you might offer.
Frank

RE: Volvo Stern Drive Identification
I borrowed the SELOC manual from my friend, but it doesn't tell you much in the way of details and doesn't go into any detail about the serials.
i.e. what would be the consequence of replacing a B ratio with a C.
I don't know the year. I suspect the boat is old enough that the leg has been swapped out more than one already. Mid eighties... I've been told that it is an AQ225. It uses a 350 chevy engine.
