Default Failed E-Check - Ready to Sell

I recently failed e-check and it has prompted me to look at another vehicle. I don't know a Volvo mechanic and I fear the entrance fee to getting the car up to E check standards would be too high. Below is an honest run-down of its particulars and issues.

1996 Volvo 850 -

Roughly 148,000 miles (odometer does not work).
Body is in great shape. Interior is good, other than aging leather seats.
Needs axle boot work and sensors to pass E Check (O2, Throttle Position)
New struts recently put in. Mass Air Flow Sensor put in March 2010.
Some electrical wiring issues with regards to overhead lights.

This could be a great car for a Volvo guru looking for parts and/or a fixer upper.

Let me know if there is any interest and send me an offer.

Thanks.

Is the car Turbo? What color is it? Sunroof? Also, location? Sedan or wagon?

You should also post this in the for sale section. How much are you selling it for?

Also, run to AutoZone and have them pull the codes for you. That would help us to help you figure out what's wrong with it and what it would take to fix it up. It might be worth it to fix it yourself, either to keep it running or to get a better sales price.

. . . Just my two coppers . . .

I don't have the sheet with me, I will post later.

To name a few - O2 Sensor, Fuel Throttle Position Sensor, MAF/? Sensor. I recently had the Mass Air Flow Sensor replaced. Of course, these are all expensive.

Does anyone know if there are two catalytic converters on the 1996 850R? If so, which is most likely to be the cause? Before or After?

Would sell for $1200. However, I've reconsidered getting it fixed at the pains of taking out a lease or buying something used. Ideally, trying to get another year out of the car and it may be justified to drop a few bucks.

The Throttle Sensor is about 80 bucks and the O2 sensor will run about 120. You should be able to replace them yourself – just check the forum (and some of the others) for great write-ups from those ‘in the know’. The MAF is 170 but if you just had it replaced, it may be throwing a code due to something else – or hope that it’s still got a warranty. I’d make sure everything is clean and you don’t have any holes in your air intake hoses.

A few years ago, my Miata failed emissions and all it took was an O2 sensor, so it may not be too expensive to get your 850 back on the road.

By the way, you asked about the cat on an 850R but you indicate your car doesn't have a turbo - are you asking about two different cars? 850R’s are turbo’d!

If that is an '96 850 R, and it's still running, $1,200 seems a little high. If you'll take $1,150 I'll come get it. Just PM me.
