I have a '98 V70 and the front passenger side strut is making a creaking noise. It's noticebly louder when I start driving when it's cold outside, however I still hear the noise when I drive. it does not get louder if I go over a big bump. it's a creaking, crackling noise, especially going over small cracks and bumps in the road. could this simply be the plastic piece under the hood on top of the strut? And, if it is, can it be replaced easily? Thanks

 

It might be your upper spring seat. Test by trying to turn the top strut nut. If the nut turns easy it is bad.
If it won't turn and feels rubbery it is good.
