Default ‘92 Volvo 240 rough idling and.. ‘clicking’?/metal clunk after rpm’s come down.

I just replaced both the main fuel pump and in tank fuel pump on my ‘92 Volvo 244. I started her up and it doesn’t want to start and idles rough (sometimes stalling it’s so bad). I just recently had my timing fixed. new belt and belt tensioner (it was definitely on time and running better than ever after that was replaced!). now with it idling rough and running rough it makes a weird clicking from under the valve cover and metal clunking when I rev the engine and let it come back to idle. is this a timing issue? do I have a bad piston or valve? anyone whose had this issue or something similar what was it or what’d you do? anyhelp would be great! thanks!

also I’ve checked the OBD diagnosis box under the hood on the driver side fender and the code is 1-1-1 so nothings wrong from the ECU’s end....genuinely confused about this

why did you replace both fuel pumps at the same time? did you also replace the fuel filter as well?

my car had started to get extremely low mpg, low end power loss, acted like it wanted to stall out after depressing the throttle at idle (bogging/choking for fuel [especially at turns]) and I was almost positive that the fuel pumps were the originals from 1992. they were in fact the originals and were in very poor shape. I did change the fuel filter aswell.

I think it would be a good idea to re-check the timing marks on the crank and camshaft. An improperly timed timing belt could cause rough running and poor performance.

you could also pull a spark plug to see its condition.
