Default 1980 242 lower analog radio removal...

This may seem silly but I'm having difficulty replacing the broken factory radio in my 1980 242. In the manual I have it says analog Radios up to 1980 you remove the volume and radio tune ***** to reveal set bolts you take out to release the radio, but when I take the ***** off there is nothing of the sort. If I try pulling the radio it moves freely about a half inch then gets caught but I have the exact same radio to replace it with and after inspecting it I cant see what would he stopping the radio from coming out smoothly. Do you. Have to remove the side panels to the dash to pull it out? Thanks a lot and as mentioned this is a 1980 242 with the radio mounted by the gear shifter under the ash tray and it is the stock factory radio.
