1980 Volvo 242 GT Real or Fake
Hey Folks, Im about to buy a 1980 242 GT but things have been changed on it and im just wondering how else can I tell if its a true GT? The VIN and Market plate is still on the passenger side in the engine bay but the only number left is the VIN. How were the Market type numbers written on it? Was it a tag similar to the VIN number or was it something that could eventually fade away? Everything else is faded except the VIN which is a pressed Tag.
It has the GT interior and GT fog lights with a Rsport cluster. I noticed the instrument cluster above the radio has more buttons then others ones I saw online. No idea what the purple one is for... I attached 2 pictures.
Thanks for the help.

I agree with Lev ...Rolex's are faked , old 242 are not. By looking at it it seems pretty accurate but you can always put the vin into google and it will tell you what kind of car it is. I had to do it with mine because I was finding all kinds of different year parts on it what scared me the most was the 86 doors when I seen that I had to go look at my wiring harness and make sure it was not cheesy.

Thanks guys, Im going to pick it up tomorrow. Its been off the road for a couple years but all around its solid. The fella selling it had kids and never got back into it.. It runs and drives but doesnt have a MVI so I have to trailer it home. Originally I was looking for an E30 but once I came across this one I had to have it haha.. Not many of them around the maritimes that I know of. Itll look good with the cedar strip strapped to the roof
Thanks again

its missing the grill, those are hard to find as they are pretty much unique to the GT, with those rectangular fogs.
re: faking a GT, I've seen a number of 'flathood conversions', where people have put a flat hood and old style nose on a newer 240 for 'style' points. of course, they don't do the interior too, and the B230F engine is a giveaway.
