1983 245 DL Wagon
I am having a transmission leak, and the people at the shop said I needed to replace the seal where the speedometer cable enters the transmission. (I think that is how they worded it). Would this be the speedometer pinion seal or just the speedometer seal. It is a 1983 245 DL wagon. I am afraid I know very little about the mechanics of cars, so any help is GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it is the same as the old M40 setup found in 144's. There are both...the pinion seal goes in before the drive, then you install the drive, The actual speedo seal is a felt one...it slides up onto the cable and into the female threaded end. Then screw the cable back onto the drive. I'd replace both. Typically, it is the pinion seal that is leaking but you're right there...might as well do both.
