Default 1983 Volvo DL Head Problems

I would like to know what the main problems were with the VW 2.4L engines that caused them to blow head gaskets. It was originally my dads car, and was running win it was stored years ago in a barn. I would like to get the car in top shape again. He always said he had problems with the head gaskets blowing. He said the car never overheated, and I was wondering if this was a casting problem.

Any Information is appreciated.

DL doesn't mean it's a diesel, by the way...DL is the trim level...plenty of gasoline powered DL's out there! The D24 has received a really bum rap in my opinion. Yes, they will blow a head gasket when overheated and they, like all diesels, require scrupulous oil change intervals. Synthetic is the way to go...I think the simple fact is Americans don't change oil regularly in gas cars...try that in any diesel and you're inviting disaster! Here's a really good article...they start out bashing the motor and then eventually some real knowledge ways in on the issue. It's long but a good read...
