Hey everyone, I've got a 1985 245 with a b230f motor. The car turns over for 3-5 seconds before startimg, but once it starts all is well. It doesn't chug or try to start, its just like a normal turn over, but extended until if fires. I usually pump the gas and this helps slightly sometimes. This seems like a little to long to have a FI car turn over. Ive got a new pre pump that works as the old one went out. Like I said, once it starts it runs like a top. Ive got no lights on the dash (other than the light out light, but thats another issue). Any ideas?

 

could be the one way valve after the fuel pump isn't working. that is designed to hold fuel pressure after shutting the engine off.

what do your spark plugs, and distributor cap look like? weak ignition can make for hard starting.

1985 is in the 'biodegradable wiring' era, the insulation is prone to failure under the hood.

 

The plugs, rotor, cap, wires, and cool are all under a year old. Is there a way to check the valve?

 

jumper to run the fuel pumps for a few seconds, wait a minute, crack the fuel line where it goes into the fuel rail, if a spurt of fuel pressure comes out, the one way valve is OK.

to jumper the fuel pumps, take a paperclip, and unbend it (or use a alligator clip jumper wire) so you can touch fuse 6 and 4 at the same time. 6 is always powered even when the ignition is off, fuse 4 goes to the fuel pumps. leave the fuses in place, and jumper the left side fuse clips...
