Default 1986 Volvo 240 - odometer not working

So my mileage is not spinning on my 1986 Volvo240DL. The main and trip mileage don't spin. I've tried swapping out the small gears inside and it did not work. When I removed my existing gears they were in perfect condition so I suspected that wasn't the issue but I tried it anyway.

Any other ideas what the issue could be?

I'm thinking of swapping out the cluster and I'm not sure what years are compatible with my Volvo. My cluster has the clock, odometer, temperature gauge and gas level. Any idea what year Volvos have a cluster compatible to mine? Tx.

did you inspect the nylon gears (both parts) to see if they were tight on the shaft or could they spin freely?

Yes I spun the trip gear and the overall mileage gear and they both spun easily enough to change the mileage freely.

My speedometer and odometer had not functioned on my 1993 940 since 2011. I used a Garmin to keep track of my speed. Previously had tried to have it serviced and no one was able to fix it. I found a used instrument cluster on eBay for $60. Took it to the dealer and paid about $150 in labor to have it installed and problem solved. I now have a functioning speedometer and odometer.

Yeah it was easy enough to take the instrument cluster out that I’d just do it myself BUT I can’t find one anywhere for less than $250 used on eBay!

That first link might actually work even though that one has a tach and mine has a clock. The others are the earlier model pre-1986.

So I was driving home tonight and hit a slight bump and the instrument cluster lights went out, the blinker lights went into a permanent on position (even though they still blink when the blinkers are used), the temperature gauge dropped completely and stopped working and the clock stopped working. The speedometer still works and the gas gauge still appears to be accurate. The mileage didn't and still does not work... Any idea what this can be???

Also can anyone confirm that this cluster on eBay in Estonia is the right one for my 1986 Volvo 240DL before I purchase it and have it sent to the US? Mine has a clock where the tachometer is but I believe that shouldn't matter. Tx.

Default 240 Odometer not working

My 93 240 has non-working instrument panel lights and also non-working odometer. Are they connected electronically? Thanks

the odometer is electrically connected to the speedometer.... it mechanically counts pulses. if the speedometer works, the odometer problem is almost certainly a broken plastic gear, after all, they are 25 years old now.

Check your connections to the cluster. Since you have had the cluster out multiple times recently, I suspect you just have a bad connection.

For solving the odometer problem, here are a few links:

I've taken out the instrument cluster to replace the odometer gears; it took a while but wasn't difficult. I think the tach should not be a problem as long as you follow the instructions to hook it up properly. My recollection is that there is a wire that absolutely should not be hooked up to anything, but I could be misremembering. I don't know how the Estonian instruments perform, but I have ordered a rear light assembly from Estonia and it was a perfect match.
