Default 1986 Volvo 240 weird engine noise.

Hey, My 86 Volvo 240 has been making a weird engine noise, I'm guessing a pistol slap? I recorded a video and want second opinions. Thanks

Has the car been overheated? Piston slap is caused by overheating.

My temp guage doesn't work but about a few weeks ago, it was about 104 degrees really hot over here in SoCal and my car just stopped and the engine was stumbling. I let it cool down for 5 hours and it started right back up. So I'm guessing it might of overheated.

sounds like an engine to me, but its really hard to know what you're hearing on a video without calibration and references.

fix that temp gauge! overheating is the one thing that will kill these motors.

Piston Slap is hard to tell from Rod Knock even in person, let alone on a video...
Piston Slap should get quieter as the engine warms (metal expands).
Rod Knock will get louder as the engine warms and the oil thins.

+1 on the gauge--driving an old Volvo (or any car) in So Cal in the summer without a functioning temp gauge is way too risky.

The may be called "hushers" but they do nothing to quiet the engine.

Welll, I have read they call them absorbers as well.....

they sit between cam followers and valve stem......

But thinking a bit more he might have lots of play between cam lobes and shims......VALVE CLEARANCE...

Yeah, but it looks like the noise started after an overheating event--that eliminates valves because they won't suddenly get out of adjustment due to overheating.
