1987 Volvo 240 DL Questions.
Hi,
I'm looking into buying an old 1987 Volvo 240 DL Wagon.
The seller is asking $1600.
It has;
200,000 miles
working AC/Heater
good brakes
good tires
the transmission was rebuilt one year ago.
interior is flawless, great leather seats
minor scratches on the outside, from rocks on the highway.
Considering that everything else is in working condition...
How much would experts like you be willing to pay for such a car?
I know buying an older car is always a risk, but I trust that an volvo would last me at least a year without dying.
Any advice is much appreciated.
Thanks!
-Carl

I agree with Tech, not a bad deal pricewise. I always recommend that anyone buying a 240 have it looked at by someone who knows the cars. Just about every area has an independent Volvo mechanic (I'm lucky, my area has two). It's worth $50-100 to get it checked out. Older 240s can have lots of hidden issues, such as steering components, leaky seals and motor mounts. They're all fixable, but it's best to know in advance, and can also affect the price you have to pay. Having a good independent mechanic can also save you a ton over taking the car to a dealer for service.
That said, Volvo 240s are among the best cars ever made. I had three, then went to Subaru for about nine years, and couldn't wait to get back to Volvo (a 93 240 wagon). Volvo's the best.
Good luck
