Default 1987 Volvo 240 wont start.

Hello-
not sure if this is the correct place to post this, if not, let me know.

Problem: Car turns over, begins to start, and dies. Will not continue running. My father replaced in tank fuel pump and checked the relay. When he manually jumps fuses in fuse box, you can hear the fuel pump start. He thinks that maybe there is a fuel cutoff somewhere that is telling the fuel pump not to run. It has never died while car is running. It was driven, parked, and wouldn't start the next day. We've been doing what we can for a couple weeks, and last week, he was cleaning wires around coil and then car started. Ran for 1 day and once again, it didn't die while running. It was parked, and wouldn't start back up. Not sure if cleaning the coil wire and it starting was coincidence or not. He's almost positive that it is electrical and is looking for suggestions and ideas from anyone who may be able to help. Is it possible that something is telling fuel pump to shut off?

thanks.

First off, you are in the right place so welcome. A 240 should run, even with a dead in-tank pump. When you jump the fuses, which pump are you jumping? If you park the car and can't restart it, it may just be the fuses that are corroding, and need a little spin to start working again.
