1988 240 Speedometer
My speedometer and odometer have been broken for a long time. First the gear broke then the speedo went. I bought a used speedometer but when I installed it car would not start. Pulled back out double checked everything back together. Car will still not start. Replaced the new used speedometer with the old broken one car starts right up. This would seem to indicate to me that the "new" used one is no good. Any ideas what is wrong? I have heard that a capacitor sometimes goes bad but I know very little about checking out electronic speedometer odometer.
I'm really interested in how this thread develops. I learned my Volvo kit on a second generatin wagon, and I am just working through a final generation wagon. My speedo is also dead, and I have the dash apart.
I can't imagine what relationship the speedo should have with the starting of the car, theoretically your car should be able to run with out any of the dash at all. Most of the electrical seems to be just "observing" what is happening in the car and interpreting it for you. Be sure to keep us up to date with what happens

Maybe there is a "lock" that prevents the engine from running without the speedo connected?
That way leasees can't cheat on the mileage.
Hopefully you have inspected the connector pins on the replacement unit, it's possible you have a bent one, or one that is pushed in and not making contact.
Until Tech looks it up, that's my WAG.

When you turn the key to on the ign switch supplies 12v to the red/black wire which supplies voltage to the back of the speedo and the rest of your lights on the dash. I found this out when my ignition switch went bad. (No power on red/blk when I supplied 12v to red/blk car could be started) and I ordered a new ignition switch. The other two wires on the back of the speedo run to the sensor on the rear axle. I am guessing that maybe I have a short and that is what is causing the problem? It is just a guess.

In an effort to leave no stone unturned correct me if I have hooked the gage cluster up wrong. The round plug is keyed and only goes in one way in one place, same for the half moon plug. There is a yellow/red wire with a small connector it only goes one place too in the lower right corner looing from the front of the gages. That leaves two wires a red/white and a blue. As of right now they are both connected to a double prong on the circuit board together. These are the only two I wonder about and maybe my problem is that it is hooked up wrong.
So today I got the brainiack idea to put the new used speedo in and connect all the wires I was sure of and leave the last two off. Car started right up and speedo worked! eveidently those wires are for optional equipt (tach?) I dimily remember in the distant past that the first time I pulled the cluster there was one or two wires hanging and since there is only one connection that could have them I thought they had fallen off and went there. (Bad idea.) Unfortunately the odometer is not working. I took it apart looking for broken gears. Virgo intacto, no broken gears. So I guess my clever miswiring burnt out something on the stepping motor board. So I guess I get to buy at least one more volvo speedo/ odo to add to my ever growing collection and get to demonstrate my stupidity on the forumn. When the tech said he had never seen that before the light came on and I realized it might be somthing i had done. I may fix this thing yet.
I would love to but I beleive that it is dead too. I am good at electrical stuff usually (please do not use this example) so maybe I can figure out what is dead (diode perhaps) and replace it.
Hopefully you can figure it out to save $$$$$$.
Thats what I would do.
Thats is what I always do.
When you have 4 kids and tons of bills the $$$$ is short all the time.
