1989 240
Ok so I have a chance to buy a 1989 240 dl with 245k miles on it. The body is rust free, the car is in really clean shape. everything works as far as I can tell and the carfax report is clean.
the asking price is $1995
I drive 74 miles a day round trip to work and my other car (a 2000 jetta) has the engine light come on every 2 months or so even though the damn thing only has 56k miles on it.
basically the volvo would be my back and forth to work car.
i guess im just looking for some feedback here. do you think the price is right for this car and how do you think one that age with that mileage is going to hold up 4 days a week taking me to work (90% highway mileage)
thanks!

Well, I guess I'll be the voice of dissent. The price of the car would vary quite a bit, depending on where you live. $1500 for a 21 year old non-collectible w/ 240k is high here in Dallas, let alone $2000. Things to ask: original motor? transmission? rear end? service records? Volvo redblocks can last a long time, but without spotless service many motors die between 200-300k. A key factor is to determine how any owners. The less owners, the better chance there is that it received some TLC. If you do purchase the car, reconcile yourself to the inevitable...there will be repairs. That kind of miles on a regular basis will soon find every flaw in the drivetrain, suspension and lighting.
