can you clarify what exactly you mean by 'turbo cutting out' ?
was the turbo boost gauge stuttering back to zero under high boost? or were you just missing power under heavy throttle? I've had both these symptoms at different times, completely different causes. or was it something else entirely?

1989 740 Turbo Trouble...
[QUOTE=pierce;368015]can you clarify what exactly you mean by 'turbo cutting out' ?
"was the turbo boost gauge stuttering back to zero under high boost? or were you just missing power under heavy throttle?"
The turbo boost gauge would stutter back to zero under high boost *and* there would be no power, but the power was there until it reached high boost (4000 RPM)
We don't have any maintenance records for it, of course, but it's got 363,000 kms on it. It's still a great car, we just want to get it running right for as little expense as possible
Thanks so much for your help and feedback.

well, check all the air plumbing between the mass airflow meter (MAF, sometimes called air mass meter, AMM) and the throttle body, including the intercooler. when my 92 did something similar, as I said, it was the silicone rubber hose that went into the air intake side of the turbo, the bottom side of it was all soft with oil, and was getting sucked past the clamp under high airflow.

That did the trick! Sorry I don't know technical terms, but my husband found a ripped smaller hose and cracks around the bend of a bigger one, replacing one with an inexpensive new hose from Lordco, and repairing the other (more expensive looking one) with gasket maker. It's a temporary fix anyway until we can source out the proper Volvo parts.
Thank you so much for your prompt and awesome help!
