1989 Volvo Idle Trouble
Hello, Recently bought a 89 volvo 240 DL, and now I'm having trouble when idling, I don't mean to sound like a broken record I've read a few threads on this, seems like a reoccuring problem with these vehicles in cold weather (I live in Minnesota). And it doesn't seem to happen when it's warmer out, but after I start it up, it will run smooth until I get to a stop light, then it will slowly start to fade, and sometimes even cut out, And the lights will flicker, I usually drop it into neutral and give it some gas, I've been looking into adjusting the idle switch(sp?) and I have the Chilton's manual for it, only one problem, I can't locate it, I know where to look where it should be but there's nothing there, I've also read a few threads about replacing the fuel pump relay, I don't have the knowledge to do that myself but I would be willing to look into it, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If anyone has a similiar model and has located the idle switch could you email me some pictures or instructions cause this is driving me nuts.
Thanks.

the microswitch is on the backside of the throttle body. Look at where your accelerator cable attaches there is a shaft connected to the round thing and on the other side of this shaft that goes through the throttle body is the throttle position sensor with the microswitch built in. You should hear a distinct click when you close the throttle. If you clean the throttle body it will probably make your switch again. Or you can be a dirty bird and just ajust your microswitch to see if this fixes it. You might also want to clean your idle control valve under the intake manifold towards the front. One electrical connector and two hoses (the valve itself is aluminium and cylindrical) you can clean it with spray carb or throttle body cleaner. Throttle body use ONLY throttle body cleaner.
