1990 240. Loud/rough start and idle. Coasting issue.
Hey everyone,
I’ve owned an automatic 1990 240 (140k miles) for almost two years now. Recently, the car has been very loud and shaking more than I’ve seen before when starting in the morning.
Furthermore, when coasting it feels like the car is accelerating and letting out a lot of gas like I’m pressing on the pedal. Lastly, when changing gears at times you can feel the car nudge after starting it and warming the engine up.
Let me know if there’s anything specific I should check l out.
I’m pretty diligent about oil changes, got my transmission flushed and belt replaced about 6k miles ago. I let it warm up for 15 minutes in the morning. The car feels normal after driving around for 20 minutes. I live in Los Angeles so it doesn’t get too cold here.
Will post a video after work if that helps. Thanks!

You can have an engine misfire, shaking, but that won't cause loudness, bad exhaust will cause that. When was the last tune up? Coasting, well, yeah, a car will accelerate, gravity will do that... "Nudge", not sure about that one, very rare...
Better post that video!

check the throttle linkage, make sure the throttle cable isn't corroded and hanging up, and that it fully retracts immediately when you let off on the pedal.
the shaking could be from a broken motor mount, and if its bad enough that can make some pretty loud banging sounds. pop the hood, start the eengine and while its idling, see how much the engine is bucking. gently blip the throttle a few times in neutral, does it buck and bang ?
other primary source of loud noise is broken/rusted exhaust pipes, but thats more of a roar and less of a rattle/bang kind of sound.
