1990 240 SDN Lowering Springs?
Hey guys, I'm new here and I was just curious if anyone knew where I could find some rear lowering springs 2-3" for my 240. I purchased it with the front end lowered and I really would like to lower the rear. I've looked on IPD and all I can seem to find is a full front to rear kit and I was trying to avoid buying all springs. I'm also not sure what kit is on my front end but it is lowered about 2-3". Thanks!
I have IPD's springs on my 240. I love love love love them!! But the amount of drop was quite small compared to the stock and yet, to me, they're just right. The car has an aggressive stance that is only noticeable to the sharp eye. I wasn't trying to make a statement. As I upgrade my car and it becomes faster and faster over time, I will work hard to maintain the sleeper appearance.
The IPD's are more than just lower though. They are considerably stiffer because I believe that they were designed with performance in mind and the lowering is only part of that equation.
That being said, when I put these on the car, I quickly noticed how really soft the original springs were. Near my home, there is a railroad crossing I've always dreaded. With the original springs, I would bottom if I hit the crossing very hard. Not so anymore with the IPD's. So I'm chiming in here to say that, if your car has been lowered by having coils cut out, you could very well be opening up a real can of worms. Yes, you can certainly get the looks you're after but performance could suffer so much that the car becomes a real chore to drive. Who wants that?

bump.. My car has the front coils cut from previous owner and I am looking to upgrade to a decent front and rear set up without spending a fortune, what kind of options am I looking at , besides IPD springs?
Well, when you say that you don't want to spend a fortune ... and the $248 that IPD is asking for AN ENTIRE SET is too much ... I get the idea that you looking to get something for almost nothing. The only option is to cut some coils out of the rear springs so that they match the fronts. There simply is nothing else on the market. This is, however, a true case of getting what you pay for. I don't see how you're going to get any real ride quality without spending at least IPD's price. To me those springs I bought have been worth every penny. Sorry to Bethe bearer of bad news.
no, I can afford ipd springs I'm just trying to find something decent for under 1000. I'm tired of cut springs. I tried a local business here in AZ but they won't custom make a set of coilovers for my car. Though they make em for some Volvo models

you just need to buy struts and shocks. and if you want camber plates. buy add them in.
Or this:
Coilover Weld Rings - Kaplhenke Racing LLC
Coilover Sleeves & Lower Spring Perch - Kaplhenke Racing LLC
Rear Adjustable Spring Perch & Mount - Kaplhenke Racing LLC
Eibach 2.5" ID XT Barrel Springs - Kaplhenke Racing LLC
price all that up and you save a few dollars, but you have to cut the lower spring seat of the struts and weld the front stop rings on yourself (/local).

a lowered car has less spring travel remaining before it bottoms out, so the springs HAVE to have a higher spring rate.
a higher spring rate requires stiffer shock absorbers to maintain a reasonable ride and control. springs+shocks plus the mass of the vehicle are a tuned system.

Some have asked me WHY did I spend that kind of money on a car with nearly 500K miles on it. But my reply is that the car is SUCH a magnificent pleasure to drive that the money invested has its own intrinsic value. Seriously, if it were me, I would hit the local pull your own parts junkyards for another set of front springs and put the car back to stock. Then I would start my mayonaise jar under the bed to get the coins for the IPD goodies and finally, I would be patient.
I try to see the bright side. Goodies for my Volvo are a fraction of the price that goodies for my Harley cost. I need an S&S carb for my 1988 E-Glide PLUS I need some slip-on mufflers to get that soul soothing sound that Harleys are famous for. Right now, it sounds like a darned old cop bike. The local bike mechanic charged me $300 to rebuild the original carb and he screwed it up so bad that I will never get the bike to run right again until I just trash this carb and go with the S&S. (it's a long story) But when I order the S&S, they will send it jetted for whatever pipes I have on the bike. If I stay with the stock pipes, I will need to rejet the carb later when I get the slip-ons. Ok, so the carb and the kit are $600ish and the slip-ons are another $400. YIKES! There's a grand right there just to get my bike running good again.
Not to wreck this thread but things could be a lot worse for ya' LOL.
There are other options, but I'd suggest sticking with those 2. There are a few more, but some shops are super busy right now (like R-Sport...etc). Kaplhenke does have a small wait time depending on avaliblity. It's worth the wait. Nice parts.
Give Ben a call at kaplhenke and ask him questions. He is super helpful with setting up and options. Which is better for you etc.
