1990 240 Vibrations when slowing down
Hi all,
I purchased a 1990 240 DL with 120,000 miles a few months ago and this forum has been an asset with any and all things related to the car. I figured I should finally make an account.
Anyway, my car has been having some strange vibrations recently. Basically, when the car is slowing down (20mph to stopped) the car shudders and vibrates quite violently- it doesn't matter whether the brakes are applied or not but the vibration will stop as soon as I tap the gas pedal. It continues all the way until its fully stopped. The car doesn't shake or vibrate or hum at any other speeds or when the brakes are applied at high speeds. The cars transmission was replaced 3 years ago (before I purchased it) and since purchasing it we have replaced the wheel bearings in the front wheels. I took it into the shop to have it checked and they replaced the transmission mounts (which needed to be done) and the vibration is still happening. They have had the car a week and still can't find the cause. I figured I would reach out to see if anyone here had any thoughts. The mechanics are seemingly at a loss.
Thanks

Given the symptoms you describe, I believe your rear-most U-joint on the driveshaft is frozen. My daughter's 240 had the same issue. I could drive all day at 70 mph with no vibration but as soon as you touch the brakes or decelerate the car shakes violently.
Take out the four bolts that attach the rear u-joint to the differential and check to see if the u-joint flexes freely. If not, it needs replacing. At that point I would drop the entire drive shaft, check all the u-joints and the center carrier bearing as Pierce suggests. Just note that when removing the drive shaft, mark the points where the front and rear shafts join together so it can be installed with the same alignment. The whole thing is balanced as a unit and must go back together in the same way to maintain the balance.
