Default 1990 740 GL intermittent starting issues, no turnover

Hi all,

I have a 1990 Volvo 740 GL. The other day it wouldn't startpower to the lights and radio, but no noise or turnover with the key in the start position. Since I was driving to go to dinner, I went before figuring out how to get it towed.

Low and behold when I came back it started again. I thought this was pretty strange, but drove home and shut it off. It's started successfully ever since then.

Talking to friends, they think the starter is going bad. What do you all think?

It's because you own an automatic and you didn't have it in Park. When not in the Park gear selector, the car will respond to Key Position 1 and 2, but will NOT start. Either you shifted into Reverse by accident, or you left it in Drive. Next time, just call and make dinner reservations ahead of time, and don't be late! Because next time you are in a rush, you'll probably not pay attention and park in that Handy-cap stall by accident. Trust me, no meal is worth the $50 parking fee.

Believe me, I checked that multiple times. No dice.

Although in any case, I really hope this is the problem.

Is there any chance the shifter is worn? I have seen this happen on simple boats with outboards, where the wear prevents neutral from being selected...
