Default 1990 740 Gle 16 Valve Oil Leaks And Bad Fuel Economy

Hi

1. I've just joined and was wondering if someone could offer advice on permanently fixing oil leaks with this car - it seems to leak like a sieve - my mechanic (a volvo specialist)says this is a common problem with this model - so I was wondering whether anyone sells 'uprated/better' seals which can be retrofitted?

2. I drive mainly in stop start urban conditions and get about 17 litres per 100km which is appalling I think. However, I can easily get around 11-12 litres per 100km in freeway driving - is this normal? (I should mention I've recently had a leaking fuel tank fixed, due to prior crash damage before I bought the car which was undetected and due to bodgy repair caused the fuel leak)

Well, permanently fixing oil leaks, have to be fixed by replacing the seal where the oil is escaping from. Cleaning the flame trap/oil separator reduces pressure on seals and helps with oil leaks.

The fuel consumption you are getting currently is high but not outrageous for the car with that motor. It is rated at 15/100 town, 10/100 hwy when new, so after 20 yrs you have to allow for some less vigor...
