Default 1990 Volvo 240 dies when put into drive

Ok, so my latest project is a 1990 244. It has a very odd problem. Now, when I first got the car it would not even start. I found it had a bad ignition module. The plugs were all fouled out and wires, cap and rotor were all bad. I replaced the n ignition module and tune parts and now it starts and idles perfect and smooth and I can hold the throttle open and rev it up to 3500 rpms etc and it will run just fine but as soon as I put it into drive it dies....strange. This is what has been done so far.

1.Replaced Ignition module
2.Replaced ECU
3.Replaced cap,rotor,plugs,wires
4.Replaced MAF sensor with a used part not new
5.checked for codes and I do have a 214 code which is for a bad crank angle sensor but I have NEVER seen a crank angle sensor cause this problem...

I have worked on hundreds of these cars and this is the first time I have seen this problem. Has anyone else experienced this and ultimately found what is was causing the problem? Any ideas? Thanks brothers and sisters

bad for the tranny, but can you idle it up to say 1500 rpm and then shift into drive? seems like any load on the motor (i.e., putting into gear) is killing it. what about letting it idle and increasing the electrical load with the ac, or accessories? its not an electrical, or a fuel delivery issue? ugh. keep us posted, may happen to us. OH! maybe there is a short, or some vibration to the crank sensor way back in there?

Thanks buck..No dies under load(shifted into gear) nothing to do with accessories....acts like a bad MAF sensor...it's definatley something with the fuel delivery system...more testing next week. have to get it on the rack and test intank pump etc... I'm sure I'll hunt it down eventually but wanted to see if anyone has had this same problem?

I have. In fact I posted about it a couple weeks ago. This was not the only problem I was experiencing, but it was one very common problem. I was getting stalls at all sorts of different occasions. Oftentimes in the morning it would start rough and idle hard, then die immediately when put into gear. So far it has turned out to be a bad crank sensor. I ran a code check and also got a 2-1-4. I found the sensor's connection on the firewall, the insullation of the wire was frayed and there was some other superficial damage to the connection. I gave it a wiggle while she was running and it died like a lightswitch. I have yet to replace the sensor, but did some light repairs to it and so far so good.

I thought I remembered your post...I too have a 2-1-4 code but this does not always mean a bad crank angle sensor. It just means at some point the car would not start...then it throws a 2-1-4 no matter what. My connection is fine and I have never seen a bad crank angle sessor start the car let it run then die when put into gear, usually just won't start or in your case start then lose connection..and die. maybe there is something volvo did not teach me and in fact a failing crank angkle sensor ca have these symptoms..if so I've learned something new. i will test my fuel pumps first and then if I find good I will replace crank angle sensor and let you kow...thanks coolson!

Found problem...weak main fuel pump...found power wire to fuel pump melted because of weak pump...replaced main fuel pump and everything is perfect now...
