Default 1990 Volvo 240 DL

Hi: I have a very nice white 1990 Volvo 240 GL sedan that I am restoring. The seats are blue cloth. The previous owner was probably overweight because the front seats are worn, misshapen and uncomfortable... especially on long trips. I would like to find comfortable, black leather seats that would work as replacements.(Passenger seats have unsightly cigarette burns.) I know Volvo made black leather seats for 940's (I owned one) and 240 turbos. Those seats would not work because of the age. All the compatible Volvos that I have looked at have seats that are in poor condition with cracked leather. Has anyone ever tackled this job? What replacement seats would work in my car?

Thank-you.

7/9 seats won't fit in a 240, its all different. you pretty much have to stick wtih 240 seats. Our 87 240GL came with leather, but it was beige and long ago failed.

you can rebuild your old seats too... pull the covers off them, fix the cushions, and put new 'custom fit' covers on them, dozens of people sell those in a wide range of fabrics. one trick is to use the cushions from right hand seats (via junkyards etc) on the left seat, since the right seat gets less use. secure the covers around the bottom of the seat cushion using 'hog rings' and they'll fit like factory.

Coverking Velour Custom-Fit Seat Covers

etc etc.

oh, somehow the important bit: "fix any broken spring wires in the cushions" got edited out.

the seats come out easily, just unbolt the 4 nuts or bolts that hold the rails to the floor, unplug any electrical connections, and they just lift right out. have a blanket or tarp or something handy to put the seats on so they don't get scraped up when you invert them etc. once they are out of the car, they are pretty easy to sort out.

when I swapped front seats from a newer 940/960 to my 740, I had to swap the seatbelt hardware from my old seats to the new, and the side trim, as the newer seats had different style trim. this turned out to be really straight forward.

while the seats are out of the car, its a great opportunity to really clean your carpets, I use Zepp brand "Advanced Oxy", and a shopvac with a 'gulper' nozzle. also a great time to really clean the seats, the rails, etc, and put white lithium grease in the rails.... clean and lubricate height adjustment mechanisms, if any.
