Hows it going me and my dad have been fixing his 240 up. We have replaced alot of parts most recently the ac comp, drier, orfice tube. We noticed that the condenser fan doesnt come on. Is this part even necessary? I know alot of vehicles dont have them. We just dont want to hurt the compressor by not replacing it. But we looked it up and found one for $300 hell we only payed that much for the parts.

You mean the electric Auxillary fan for the A/C? yes it is necessary if you are going to use your A/C so the car will not overheat especially at idle. Pull rel;ay out and flip A?C switch, put test light in hole and test for power. No power probably bad fuse or bad switch. If power probably a bad relay...replace relay. Try replacing the relay first(black relay under hood mounted on drivers fender it's the cooling fan relay/noise suppression relay..) That doesnt't work, make sure you have power to fan if so fan motor is bad...

I keep reading on various lists that the electric fan is supposed to be on whenever the A/C is on. I agree that this would be desirable. And it is true for most cars. However, I discovered after considerable reading of various service manuals, studying wiring diagrams and so forth, that on my '91 740 turbo the cooing fan is activated by the temp switch on the radiator and/or the high pressure switch under the accumulator - only. There is actually a pretty good tutorial on one of the other forums - I forget if it's Brickboard or SwedishBricks - that tells you how to wire your fan to come on whenever you switch the A/C on, but it was not originally designed to do so. You can test the fan with a screw driver by turning the key on and jumping the two terminals on the coolant temp switch. It's on the upper passenger side of the radiator on my 740. It may be somewhere else on your 240, but if you have an electric fan I guarantee you have a switch. Anyway, if the fan comes on, everything is probably as it should be - or at least as Volvo thought it should be.

well ok so me and my dad went and got a electric fan from autozone. The shop installed the new fan and come to find out its the relay. But heres the question they also the day before say they direct wired the fan to see if it worked just trouble shooting and they said it didnt. Is the relay need to make the fan work? or could they have direct wired the original fan to see if it were messed up

you can bypass the relay and hard wire the fan but I would recommend just getting a used relay or buying one new(because it serves more than 1 purpose) from www.fcpgroton.com for $19.95...it's called the noise suppression relay/cooling fan relay..good luck..

Maybe you can help me. On my 93 240, I recently got the ac repaired with a new orifice tube. AC fan did not at first work, then it did. Ok I can live with that oddity. Now three weeks later the fan would continue to run for longer periods of time when turned off, to the point where it will not stop unless I pull the 20 amp fuse. Now today I noticed just after reinstalling the fuse and just as soon as the compressor kicks in so does the fan. Only two things that I can think of, relay and whatever controls the relay. What would that be and where would it and the relay be located? I appreciate any and all assistance .
