Default 1991 240 wagon start problems

hello there,
i was needing assistance with a start issue. the engine will turn over but wont start. i have pulled the fuel pump relay and the noise supression relay and found them working fine then put them back. i have "jumpered" the fuse terminals to activate the fuel pumps and the seem to be functioning.. at the moment im at a loss. i have bought a chiltons manual for this car and am waiting to see if it has some magic to share and help out.. i would appreciate any input you might have..

sincerely,

tremilow (the stranded)

I would start by checking for spark to make sure your timing belt is OK.

Make sure the wires that connect to the cylindrical Ignition Coil are making good contact.

Also is the firing order correct? How did this happen? Were you working on the car? Did it just not start one day? If the timing belt is fine, but you have no spark and no fuel, I would suspect the crank angle sensor on the flywheel bell housing.

Default wow titan!!

i just noticed the last thing you said that might just have something to do with it.... what is the crank angle sensor?? im asking because the starter/flywheel/SOMETHING has always kinda made a "squaaaking" sound... and now it has a high pitched "squaak/whirr" when the starter is engaged. is this a valid issue that would cause start problems?

thank you titan!!

im looking forward to your reply...

I don't think that a squawking noise from the starter is your cause of a no start. If it turns the engine over, it's working. The crank angle sensor is a magnetic reluctor pickup. It's basically a metal detector. The sensor is placed close to the flywheel and there are holes drilled in known positions in the flywheel. When a hole passes the sensor it disrupts the electromagnetic field of the sensor sending a wave form of voltage into the receiver of the computer. It takes that infomation to determine exactly where the crankshaft is positioned at any moment of time. If it goes bad, the computer thinks that en engine is not turning and won't try to inject fuel or fire the plugs. The sensor is not in contact with the wheel and shouldn't make any audible noise. I think that may be something else.

Have you checked any of the other items listed earlier? Bubba's suggestions are a great place to start if you have not yet.

I have a 240 DL and had a similar problem last week. I don't know much about cars but have you considered the ignition switch? Mine was cranking with a steady cadence but would not kick over (but then other times it would start up just fine). Replaced the ignition switch and sure enough it started.

Default OK....not the crank position sensor...

i tested the old sensor.... wasn't getting much off of it "ohm wise".. no fire from spark plug wires... tested the coil... nada.. no fire!! ok so now im keeping the new sensor cause the new one tested in the right ohm range.. plus no one tells you that you pretty much have to HUG the engine to reach that crank sensor.. so yep now im on to find a mystery 60amp fuse going into the ignition(that we cant seem to find) and then the ignition its self.. im glad i have bout six "disposable" test lights! one cant have too many! expecialLy when testing the electrical parts of a car!!! i have not ruled out that this car is haunted by an evil **** spirit... i mean i even hugged the enginE for like an hour and a half!! IF ANYONE HAS PICTURES OR CAN GIVE ME A HINT ON WHERE AND WHAT THIS 60AMP FUSE LOOKS LIKE?? HELLLP!!

thanx, yall all rock and thank all of your for your help and input!! i am starting to feel that volvo family thing!! i just need a working car and a hot nerdy chick that's into volvos too lol
