just came accross a 91 240 wagon that i grabbed for $400 bucks. im gonna grab a few little parts off of it i need for my personal 86 wagon project. after that though, im gonna clean her up and try to make a few bucks. before i do that, its got a couple small problems that probably have easy fixes that id like to repair before i send it to a new home.

first is the speedometer. it goes in an out but mostly out. jumps now and then but its not consistent. second, the fuel gauge is hanging below empty, is there an easy fix for this?

other than that its all problems ive encountered before.

speedometer: buy the replacement cog sold for around 21 dollars with instructions...ipdusa.com......and instrument cluster stabilizer...cheap....

Fuel gauge:

you can dig in there and work on the fuel gauge plate individually...some patience and tinkering needed...your are going to replace the cog anyways...

Or just leave it as is...and direct the new buyer to fcpeuro.com or ipdusa.com for the parts....

 

The cog you mentioned only affects the odometer - not the speedometer. So if the speedometer is intermittent, it is not the odometer gear. Since the speedometers are electronic, I would first check the connections on the back of the speedometer to make sure they are clean and secure. After that, check that the sensor in the differential to make sure it is secure as well. If neither of those solve your issue, pull the cluster and look for bad solder joints on the speedo circuit board.

it does have a stuck odometer, but that doesnt have anything to do with the speedometer. the gear wouldnt fix the speedo.

i think what ill do, since it does have the odometer problem like they all do, is fix that and let the fuel gauge go. then i can tell whoever i sell it to to just keep track of their mileage.

but im gonna try and get the speedometer straightened out. hoping for a loose connection.

 

The fuel gauge is probably the fuel sender in the tank: have to pull it out and replace it. The gauge itself rarely dies completely.

 

erratic speedo problems can be the sender in the differential, or the wiring from there to the speedo in the dash, OR the speedo itself in the dash. if you know someone with electornics test equipment they should be able to help you debug it (an oscilloscope would show the pulses from the sender, so see if they are making it to the speedo, and if not trace backwards.... putting a square or sine wave of about 1V into the speedo would give a speed reading proportional to the frequency, start at a few hertz, work up to a few 100hz)
