Default 1991 740 no spark

Help; 1991 740 no spark. I did a search and didn’t find the thread with the cure yet.

My daughter, for her first car, bought a 1991 740 non-turbo that has ~135k miles She has driven it very little while she is fixing some of what was broken by the previous owners.

Problem: Periodically the car started dying. Sometimes it could be restarted instantly, sometimes not, but would later. Since it happened randomly I hooked my timing light to it and waited for it to stop. It is a spark issue. Cam shaft is turning, and I am not if there are, or how to read, any codes.

I do hate the thought of asking for help on a subject that has been discussed before, especially for my first post, but can someone advise me or direct me to the thread(s) that will help?

Thanks in advance,
James

Go to www.stepbystepvolvo.com and download free 740 no-start guide. No spark is usually due to (1) rpm sensor (in your case; Hall sensor 1988 or earlier), (2) Power Stage, (3) ignition coil, or (4) wires leading to above.
