1991 SE Wagon Automatic
So, not new to the forums but first time asking about this car. 91' wagon stock all the way. Strange thing is in regard to the shifter. Automatic transmission with OD. It won't stay in park, it wants to bounce out and start rolling. It feels like it never fully engages park. Odd thing is that if you push the shifter forward its just fine, that is until you let go. I have some bushings for the shifter linkage but the ones that are on there feel firm. I thought about adjusting the shifter push rod however I wanted to post this up first. It's been a nightmare adjusting the park/neutral switch so that the reverse lights work and so it can start in the park and neutral positions, but the fact that I had to move that around makes me feel that the shifting linkage just ain't right.
Check your motor and transmission mounts. If they are broken, the whole engine/transmission can shift around causing the linkage to be off. Also, has the car been in a fender bender? My daughter's car was in a minor wreck that bent the front end slightly and her shifting was off making it difficult to get into park.
yup it has, before I purchased it. The hood is damaged, looks like it originally hit on the front driver side head on if you go below the car and poke around.
I checked them out and they look fine, however the engine wobbles if I try to physically move it, this would definitely be a problem I assume. Looks like I need mounts and then further troubleshooting it seems.

The engine will wobble a little since it sits on rubber mounts. But check them. If they are bulging at all or if you see any cracks or rips, then they need replacing. If the car was in a fender bender, then the jolt may have broken them. They are designed to shear in an accident.
If the mounts are all good then adjusting the shift lever linkage is the only way to correct the problem short of taking it to a body shop and having them straighten out the frame.

this is a 1991 940SE ? thats a bit of an odd duckling, it actually is a 960 but with the turbo 4 much like the turbo 760s. the 960s differ from the regular 940s in a lot of small ways. biggest thing is a completely different dashboard wiring harness, fuse panel, relay panel. also, more sound proofiing, more reinforcements in the front suspension to quiet/smooth the ride, and more 'upscale' features like climate control. the turbo 4 engine and transmission are the same as a 91 940 Turbo (and pretty much the same as a 89-91 740 turbo). different steering wheel, steering column control switches, etc. alloy hood with a covered cowl and gas lifts, instead of the normal 740/940 steel hood with spring hinges. a bit more exterior chrome on the trim. better factory stereo.
