Angry 1991 volvo 245 GL no start

my 1991 volvo 245 GL wagon will not start. I have spark. When i turn the ignition on before cranking it, i don't hear a buzzing from the fuel pump.

here is what i did so far:
1. sprayed starter fluid and it started for a second and stalled.

2. I disconnected the fuel pressure regulator and jumped out fuse 4 and 6 (therefore, bypassing fuel pump relay). Here is where I got a strong flow of fuel coming out of the fuel rail. (I jumped out the fuel pump relay 30 to 87/2 under the kickspace as well and got same results).

3. When i put the fuel pressure regulator back in its place, i tried jumping the 4 and 6 fuse while i crank the car over. No start at all (I figured this would start it, but no go).

Does anyone know if there is another relay for the fuel injection, or a MAIN relay? Would the ignition switch under the steering column cause no fuel to injectors? How about the ignition module? I pulled the glove box out and there is a couple relays (one with a fuse in it). I don't know what these are, so i did not touch them.

Any help would be much appreciated. Also, If I need to check other relays or other vital parts, could ya please give me the exact location where I can find them within the car, because I don't have a good manual on hand. Michael

start with the basics
you said you have spark, is it at the right time ( timing belt failure )
do you have compression ( timing belt failure )
is it getting air ( filter blockage )
fuel : you said you have flow, but is it making pressure ( regulator failure )
you could try pinching the hose after the regulator while cranking to check it

ok
i re read your post and i see that it ran on starter fluid
so it is likely a fuel issue
try the pinch on the hose trick

on my old 88 240 i had the same problem. it ended up being my ICU (ignition control unit). most likely the problem is something simple and electrical.

I am new to Volvos and I am looking at a 91 240 that cranks and will start with starter fluid. same as OP. I don't think it is the ICU. it sounds fuel related.....is the fuel injection control unit the same thing as the ecu on these cars?
