1992 240 m47 manual transmission help!
My transmission began making a knocking noise with the clutch pedal out, so I figured I would start by replacing the input shaft bearing. One problem, I can’t figure out how to get the input shaft bearing off of the input shaft. If anyone has any tips please let me know. I am having a super hard time with this. How many snap rings need to be removed in order to take this off? I have removed one big one and one small one bit this bearing isn’t moving. Please help |
Perhaps you might consider obtaining a service manual.
Have you cleaned the transmission and examined all of the bearings, gear teeth, and looked in the bottom for metal? Does the bearing make noise, and how tight does it feel? With the clutch pedal depressed while halted if in gear you only have the throw out bearing spinning. Has the throwout bearing been examined? |
transmission repair is non trivial. transmissions require the shafts be properly shimmed to the correct amount of end play, and so forth, the proper rebuilding manual is a must. there's literally 100s of parts inside that M47.

Zombie, yes I finally found a service manual online for this transmission. Seems there is a lot to it.... the noise only occurs with the pedal out. With the pedal in the noise goes away, leading
me to suspect the input shaft bearing. I wish the problem was as simple as a throw out bearing. Thanks for the reply |
PIerce, I have found a rebuild manual and it seems I have a lot of work ahead of me... I was hoping to be able to remove the input shaft bearing from the front and put a new one on without having to remove any internals... but I’m not that lucky this time around. Thanks for your reply

does it happen in neutral when you're fully stopped? and how fast is this knocking noise when the engine is idling in neutral ?
the thing is, on a manual, all the gears are turning all the time, but the shafts aren't engaged until you select a gear. |
other knoledge
The Turbo brick people did a post. https://forums.tbforums.com/archive/.../t-250481.html.
You may find it helpful. I thought it was well written, but I've done more R&R than building. |
Pierce, the knocking speed goes along with the engine speed... at first I thought it was the engine but when laying underneath was definitely the transmission.
so I finally got the bearing off without having to take the input shaft out... don’t ask how... but after seeing how tight the bearing was pressed I’m afraid I’m not going to be able to get a new bearing pressed on without damaging something else inside the transmission. So I need to get the input shaft out.. in order to do this - per the green book- I need to remove the front countershaft bearing which lets the countershaft drop enough to pull the input shaft out. So now I am in search of this special puller to remove the countershaft bearing.. getting closer hopefully. |
Zombi, yes that thread is helpful to me but some of the links aren’t working for me. I’ll keep looking.
Has anyone seen an exploded view of the m47 with a parts list with part numbers.?? I have just been finding a picture with numbers but no parts to go along with the numbers |
The attached pictures is what I’m trying to explain when I say removing the countershaft bearing will allow the countershaft to drop a little so the gears on the input shaft can clear the gears on the countershaft. The top illustration shows what should happen I think...

clam shell puller time. perhaps with heat?

Pierce that’s exactly what I’m looking for perfect! Thank you so much... but can you see numbers beside the parts? I can’t but I can just count down the page I guess. Either way big help!
this is what the countershaft bearing looks like... so I will need some type of puller with small arms to get into between the rollers and push off of the actual countershaft. I can take a pic of the actual bearing tomorrow and a picture of the type of puller I’m thinking of. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/volvofo...f316a7ccd9.png |
SO here’s is the bearing and the puller that Volvo recommends. I am on the search for something similar. I’ll let y’all know what happens. Thanks for the help

I have an 89 M47 that I know nothing about. Came in a 245 parts car that had an engine fire. 200+k miles and no history

To whom it concerns..... I was able to remove the counter shaft bearing by prying it out with a set of crooked end needle nose players.. and I took the 5th gear housing off to allow the counter shaft to drop in the front.
the input shaft pulled out so now I am waiting on a new inpitbshaft bearing and I will try to put this thing back together. Thank you to everyone who helped me through this... hopefully it works when I put t back together. Check out the countershaft tip... it’s pretty chewed up. But the bearing rolls smooth and does not look bad at all. Maybe this is where the knocking was coming from. Who knows??? Here are some pictures of the transmission being torn apart maybe they will help some one in the future.
