RE: 1992 740 engine
Hello,
Could be,as always,a FEW things:
Fuel pump,fuel pump relay,fuel accumulator,TP sw(throttle position sw.,
Ign. cap/rotor (dammaged or getting wet),Ign. coil.
To me that's the general start list for Veh. site unseen and not knowing what has been done to veh. prior.
Check and see if Volvo has the OBD1 diagnostic (a little black box approx. size 1"x2" with little red led.) If so it is located in the Engine compartment on the LEFT inner fender near Shock tower...Hope this at least gets you going.
Good luck keep me posted....

having trouble with engine runing , it will run for a short time down the highway and shut down as if the fuel was cut off let it set for a few min. and it will start up and run fine for awhile it could be just a mile or two or the rest of the day

Also another possibility is the fuel pressure regualtor on fuel rail...BUT these are all possibilites not a sure thing...hard to diagnose without Veh...
Back to the OnBoardDiagnostics...When you find the OBD1 Box...Key in on position, remove the cover on the box stick the onboard wire with pin at its end, connect to the box into i belive hole pin2? press down button next to led. hold down for 5-6 sec. release repeat 5-6 sec. release and check for any codes (the led will/should blink in sets of 3 groups ie.
blink/blink__blink/blink/blink___blink/blink... it could be in any group of 3's....
write down the codes if any...
Again this should at least get you to a basic diagnostic level....
P.S. go to Volvo publication and pick up the Volvo manuals they are in specific areas of car ie. engine, trans, front suspention etc...
Reading/Knowledge will help you get familar to Volvos 4cyl engines... relativly basic til approx. 1995/6 then they went to OBD2 diagnostics...a little more involved...
Take care and good luck.
