1993 240 sitting for two (2) years!
hello all,
new to your group. had a 240GL (20) years ago. just inherited a 240 that was parked two years ago and never run again.
cleaned out the tank. put in fresh gas. check engine light is on. going to borrow a code reader to see what the computer is showing.
got the car to crank, eventually run! tough to start from cold. opened up the air box.....rodents filled the thing! ate through the air filter. **** everywhere!
cleaned the WHOLE thing out. took all the hoses off, inspected for cracks/breaks. washed up everything. new air filter, clamps, etc.
IF/WHEN it starts, it seems STARVED for air. can get it to stay running with my foot on the pedal. exhaust smells really, really rich too. almost a bit "smoky". I'm sure the computer will tell me something, but does anyone have a basic idea of what I'm looking for? thank you.
car is in great shape, and I want to bring her back to life!

No code reader is necessary to read codes on your car. Take a look at this site. It describes how to read codes for your model. Most likely your car has the LH2.4 injection although I have read that some '93 models have LH3.1.

Tread lightly. You can do more damage by jumping in and starting it and revving it up. I'd pull all the air related ducting and clean them out. Clean the AMM and check for obvious damage. Pull the throttle body and clean. Shop-vac the intake opening while the throttle body is removed to hopefully suck out any loose debris and spray some carb cleaner in there and clean with a rag as best as possible. I'd change the fuel filter too before going any further. If its partially clogged the pressure will built up and burst your hoses (don't ask how I know this) causing a bunch more work and YES the car will run with a partially clogged filter and even leaking hoses (again, don't ask.)
Its would have been a good idea to pull the valve cover and poor some engine oil over everything first BEFORE starting it back up because the top end will have dried out pretty good after 2-years but too late on that and you're probably ok. At the very least its a good idea to jump or pulse the starter a bit (without letting it start) to shoot a little oil up there before fully starting it up and to make sure everything is moving.
