Default 1993 240 Tail / Break Light Problems

Greetings,

I have a 1993 4 dr sedan that I am trying to make street legal. My current project is to get the brake/tail lights legal. So here is where I started. Lights off - turn signal both sides work fine. When I press on the brakes right break/tail light works, 3rd light in the back window works, but left brake/tail light does not work. With Lights turned on, both indicators, but 5W tail light only work, left brake/tail 21W tail light works as a tail light, but not as a brake light. Right tail/brake 21W tail light does not work as a tail light only, but does work as brake light. 3rd brakes works.

So I read the owner manual, and by Haynes guide as noted that the right tail/brake light is supposed to be in a white color mount. Mine was black. I noticed a bag full of broken bulbs from the prior owner and noted the white one. I swapped it and noticed the brackets that allow it to stay in were all broken. As I inserted it the the righ tail/break light came on ! Went to put some duct take just to hold it down and it slipped and I must have grounded or something as the #7 8amp blew. Inserted the new fuse and now back to where I was, except the right 5W tail light doesn't work.

Any thoughts on what to try next ? Any good, non-dealer reasonable repair guys in Greenville SC any one can recommend?

Regards,
Pat

Left and right sockets are interchangable EXCEPT for the dual filament one. Also, the printed circuits are known to wear out. I attached left and right PDF exploded views for you. Should be easy to correct.

In the manual it has a note that states "*Right side lamp holders are white. Left side lamp holders are black."

When you look at the white one, it has 3 metal connectors versus 2. Is that significant?

You should have a three tab socket for both the left and right side. These sockets hold the dual filament bulb - one filament for brake and one for tail light.
