Question 1993 volvo 240 wagon fuel pump

My mom has a 1993 240 and the place she took it too wants $600.00 to change her fuel pump!
Can some please let me know where it is located and whats involved in changing it.
I am pretty mechanically inclined as far as motorcycles go so I am pretty confident I can change it I just need to know where its at and if there any procedures I should follow. I just cant see her paying that much just to swap out her fuel pump
Oh and its a wagon if that helps

Any help would be appreciated,

Dean

There are two fuel pumps in the car. A transfer pump that is located in the gas tank and the main pump which is located under the car, left side under where the back seat is. You need to find out which one or both are bad. Here is a link to a site that describes how to remove the transfer pump:

http://cleanflametrap.com/transferPump.htm

It also shows how you can test both pumps. If you jumper the left side of fuses 4 & 6, both pumps should run. If you hear the main but not the transfer pump, then your transfer pump is bad, etc.

Many times the transfer pump will go bad but the car will still run. This causes extra strain on the main pump and it eventually fails.

Good Luck

I checked out that link lots of good info. I am going to hold off and get the ipd tool to remove the sender lock nut, I am going to test it this weekend to figure out which pump it is but until then I believe her problems were that it wouldnt start intermittently and would just shut down while driving ont the street or freeway. It seems from reading up on other posts that if the pre-pump (in tank) goes bad the main will still be able to feed fuel and not vice versa is this true?

I might as well change both of them and the relay any other parts I might need?

I did this on a 90 740, I used a giant pair of channel locks to get that big nut off.

If it periodically won't start and dies sometimes while driving, it may not be the pumps at all. It may just need a relay. The relay is behind the glove box. Just remove the panel below the glove box and you should see a white square plastic box - this is the fuel pump relay.

Of course, your testing of the pumps as described in the link in my previous post should reveal whether they are working properly or not.

Good luck.

They gave me the same pump! well they gave me 2 main pumps so I gotta hit AZ and see if they will exchange one of them so I am on hold for right now.
I got the cover off the inspection plate but it looks like I will need a bigger pair of channel locks to get the nut off so I am on hold for the time being.
Oh BTW my Mom is going to give me the wagon so now I am the proud owner of a 1991 Volvo 240!
Now I just need to get her running so I can drive her home.

you don't need a special tool for the bung nut. just use a piece of wood and tap it lightly CCW and it will come off... it's the easiest part of the job...

Ok here is an update I ordered 2 Delphi pumps from Rockauto and I opened the Delphi box and what do I find, AIRTEX pumps! Good thing I read the clean flame trap post like 20 times. I checked the part# etched on the pumps and both are AIRTEX part #'s. Are AIRTEX any good? or should I send them back?
