need to replace a/c compressor but have been told to stay away from rebuilds because they are done in china and do not last - was told to get one from a salvage yard instead - any help on this topic would be appreciated

 

How would you know if the salvage yard ones work? For a compressor I'd still get a rebuilt one.

 

the 'real' volvo rebuilt ones are $300 at tascaparts ($400 at a dealer), with a $50 core charge. they are probably better quality than -insert-random-brand-here-.
