Red face 1995 volvo 940 base

Hi!
I just bought a 1995 volvo 940 and i all ready have problems.
The car was running hot.

The cooling system was dirty. The water looked like chocolate.
So i changed the water several times until the water was clear.

Then i added flush cleaner (prestone).
But the car is running hot again.

What i am doing wrong?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you.
Hector.

bad thermostat?

bad water pump?

bad/plugged radiator?

flush cleaner is NOT something you leave in the engine, thats something I'd never use, but aren't you supposed to put it in, then flush it out? you need to use 50% coolant mixed with water, the correct coolant type is Zerex G05 (this is the same formula as the original Volvo coolant).

Hi pierce!
You are all ways a welcome friend.
I have a modified thermostat.
It holds the thermostat gasket but it have a big hole in it. The water just run thru it.
Water pump? I have not check into it yet.
Plug radiator?
I flushed the cooling system until the water runs clean, then i added the radiator flush.

I will check the water pump tomorrow.
Thank you pierce.

Pierce, the kind of radiator flush that i am using, it can be used for 3 or 4 days, then i will flush it again and then put 65/% coolant in the engine.
Thank you.
Hector.
