1998 940T manual. Engine sound.
There's something making a funny noise - if it's a bearing noise need to put a stethoscope on timing belt tensioner bearing, water pump, alternator,ac clutch, - manual trans - does the noise change when you push on the clutch?
This is all I've seen, so i can't answer your question.
In your opinion, can it be something real bad? The car costs 1500, and exterior and interior both look great so I can't expect perfect mechanical condition, I guess.
sure, say its the throw out bearing on the clutch. if you can't do the work on your own, figure $1000 to drop the tranny to access the part and do the clutch while you're in there. Say its a timing belt tensioner - are you able to do the repair yourself? Figure $500 to have a shop do the timing belt. Maybe its the AC compressor clutch... you get the picture.

I'm wondering if this car is worth pursuing.
You are in Europe so quoting US prices is useless. A lot of Volvo repairs are easy comparatively speaking but still, it takes some tools and skill, and willingness to get dirty. But I like this car! I'd buy it in a second if it is what I imagine it to be...
It may be worth paying to professional inspection done. If the noise is in the accessories / belts then you probably resolve the issues on your own. If the noise is in the clutch its a more complicated repair but can also be done with a helper provided you have the tools and a good place to work.
Yeah, a placer to work would be hard at the moment. Would have to rent a garage just for the effect. Not ideal.
Since to not be clutch. I aked the guy to do a small test. Sound ain't perfect, but seems to be belt related.
