240 1993 no heat
Hi- My sweet 240 is not giving out heat. The blower is working. A week ago the same thing happened, it was a very cold day and no heat. Then later on I did get heat. This morning, the same, no heat and it was cold outside.
Is this the kind of problem that most mechanics can solve or do I need to take it to a volvo mechanic?
240 volvo expertise is dwindling.
Thanks in advance.

heat on 240's is controlled by a water valve right next to the gas pedal (behind the center console side trim). ths water valve is in turn controlled by a cable activated by the hot-cold lever.
As Pierce stated, the heat is controlled by a valve down near the gas pedal. Normally this could be fixed by just about any mechanic. However, the original part is no longer available from Volvo. Many of the parts dealers online sell a ScanTech replacement part that is basically junk. Over on brickboard, Dave Samuels has created a reasonable quality replacement. Check out this thread:

this kit is great, too. the valve is from a older dodge pickup truck, its all metal, and it works very nicely.

wait, a 1993 240? that might use a completely different sort of heater valve, as I believe Ive heard that they retrofitted the 940 system on that last year (boggles the mind they'd bother). on a 740/940 the heater valve is vacuum operated, and is on the engine side of the firewall.
IF thats the case, there's two different sorts of valves people use.
Volvo Heater Control Valve - 700/900 Models AFTERMARKET 103059 9447896 1259327E
(which is a fairly generic part from some generic car or another, I don't remember)
and the real volvo ones,

(which can also be had from the OE maker of them, I'm thinking it was VDO or something, but I also don't remember).
On my 740T, I replaced the first style with the 2nd, and found it gave better control at the lower end of the range, the first style was practically on/off (and then it failed and leaked).
