240/740 motor swap
Hi all,
This might have been answered already but I couldn't seem to find it. I have a '91 240 wagon that has a dead motor and was looking to put a motor from a 740 in it. the only issue I can see is the 740 has a cam mounted distributor but the 240 had a block mounted distributor. do i need to change anything on the 740 motor before I put it in the 240? Does it have to have the block mounted distributor or can I leave it cam mounted?
Thanks,
Graham

You will have to move the distributor to the block. There's not enough room behind the engine in a 240. Intake manifold, alternator, ac and ps mounts are in different areas also.
What year is the 740? Does it have an engine speed sensor? (aluminum bracket bolted above the flywheel to the block)

It is off a 92, I am not sure about the speed sensor as the 740 is not here with me atm. What does moving the distributor entail? Should I use the cam/head off the old block and do I have to change any gearing inside the block or is it already there?

Take distributor off 740 engine, install cam plug. Remove blanking plug on 740 engine, (clean the hole where the distributor goes) install 240 distributor.
Some sensors in the block/head may be different, and need to be swapped. Volvo used a "regina" fuel system on some 740's, the 240 is Bosch.
