240 control arm- confused newbie
Hello wise and benevolent Volvo gurus.
After a couple of harrowing experiences on my motorcycle, i recently gave up being a two-wheeled guy and bought a 1985 240 dl wagon with 180,000miles from a close friend's parent- who is a volvo specialist. The car was the owner's baby and has been kept up accordingly. I love this car! Unfortunately, i let my gf borrow it and she managed to run it up onto a curb- ruining both wheel and tire, and bending the ''a'' shaped contol arm (front-driver's side). Heartbreak/domestic unrest ensued as you may well imagine. Anyway, i mopped up the tears and explored my options, finally deciding to get a new tire (the others are almost new), a wheel from my local lkq salvage yard, and a new control arm from Dorman via my local parts store. On recommendation from my pal's mechanic father who sold me the car, i ordered dorman part no. 520 557 with hopes of installing it myself.
Well, the part arrived and i noticed that it does not look much like the one under my car. I have been searching all over the net to try to see what it is that i need (the seller is out of the country right now and can't be reached). It seems that everywhere i look today, the information is either not to be found, or confusing/conflicting in some way. If i knew more about year/model part compatibility, perhaps it would be a cinch. Sadly, i'm a babe in the woods here. I'm a butcher and i build guitar amps and pedals so i'm good with my hands and am not dull-witted. I just don't know squat about cars. Anybody out there wanna help me get back on the road? I would be incredibly appreciative. Thanks in advance. -wade

the volvo part number for the control arms is 1205680 (left hand) or 1205686 (right side) for all 240s
if you're replacing that, I'd probably replace the bushings too, and do both sides, along with R&R'ing the inner tierod ends and such as they are often pretty sloppy on a older 240. be a good time to do new struts, too
