I have a 1990 240dl sedan.
sometimes (not sure why, thats why im posting) the check engine light will come on
and a few seconds later it will die and all the dash lights come up.
SOMETIMES THOUGH! i can save it by sticking it in neutral and smashing on the gas
but that only works every few times
it wont do it for a month or a week, but then it will just happen, a few times in a row.
i thought i was just getting some bad fuel, but not this often.
i was told a long time ago it could have some sort of sensor issue but that was 300+ to fix,
so we tried a tune up and it worked for a bit.
can anyone help me?!?

Your car has a self-diagnostic unit that records fault codes. The unit is located in the engine compartment to the rear of the drivers side strut tower.
(Socket #2 is fuel, Socket #6 is ignition)
Remove the cap from the diagnostic connector,In the cap is a wire, unplug the wire.Plug the wire in to socket #2, turn key to position 2 (key on, engine off) push the button next to the letter A for one or two seconds,no more than three.Watch the red light, it will flash out a 3 digit code, there will be a slight pause between the numbers.
(example:1-2-1 = flash,pause,flash,flash,pause,flash)
After the 3 digit code has been displayed press the button again, to retrieve other codes, repeat until codes repeat themselves to make sure you read all of them. The code 1-1-1 is no fault found.Repeat the process for socket #6.
If you retrieve a code or codes post them.
